PM Chinh learns about Port of Rotterdam’s development model

VOV.VN - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh learned about the management and development model of the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands on December 13 as part of his official visit to the Netherlands.

A representative of the Port of Rotterdam Management Company said that the Port of Rotterdam is considered the gateway to Europe, with container yards covering an area of ​​more than 485,622 m2.

From the port of Rotterdam, there are a total of 42 long-distance freight trains running each week. The port has 100 direct shipping services which go to 200 ports worldwide, including Vietnam.

Most notably, the Port of Rotterdam's catch reached 14,349,446 TEUs in 2020.

The site represents the busiest seaport throughout Europe and is the 10th largest seaport in the world, employing 500,000 people and contributing 8% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the Netherlands.

The Port of Rotterdam is managed by a public company, which includes private companies that both develop infrastructure and work to manage different items.

The advantage of this management structure is that public companies are able to share the financial burden of investment and management with private ones.

It is in the process of promoting sustainable development, including energy transformation and digital transformation for use as part of both port operations and shipping.

The authorities of the port have been investing in the sector and have accumulated a large market share in a number of seaports globally.

Upon answering a question from PM Chinh about Vietnam developing an international transshipment port capable of co-operating with the Port of Rotterdam to build an international transshipment port, a representative of the port of Rotterdam said that Vietnam boast huge potential for building a world transshipment port. Indeed, Vietnamese import and export goods’ volume stands at US$700 billion this year, simultaneously boasting a strong location on an international shipping route which sees over 60% of the world's cargo pass through the region.

The Port of Rotterdam Authority is therefore willing to collaborate with the nation to develop a seaport in the Southeast Asia, although it must research and consider the method and scale of ties.

According to PM Chinh, the Netherlands is a country that boasts a long-standing developed shipping system and seaports, while it remains a relatively new field for Vietnam.

He therefore wishes for the Netherlands and the Port of Rotterdam Authority to co-operate with Vietnam in this field based on mutually- beneficial collaboration.

He suggested that the Port of Rotterdam Authority co-ordinate with Vietnamese ministries, sectors, and localities to continue researching the potential both that exists in terms of geographical location and cargo volume of Vietnam and the wider region. This should be done with the ambition of building an International transshipment ports in the nation that is capable of competing with other regional transshipment hubs.

According to PM Chinh this is only the beginning of prospects of building long-term ties between Vietnam and the Netherlands in the field of seaports and shipping.

The Vietnamese Government will therefore assign relevant ministries and sectors to co-ordinate, research, and make recommendations to build ties and development, he added.

This is the final activity of PM Chinh during his official visit to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, with the PM’s delegation departing for an official visit to Belgium to attend a summit in commemoration of the 45th anniversary of ASEAN-EU relations.
