One million doses of US-donated Pfizer vaccine set to arrive in Vietnam soon
VOV.VN - The US will donate an additional one million Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines to Vietnam, Vice President Kamala Harris told Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during a meeting held on August 25 in Hanoi.
US VP Harris said the doses would arrive over the course of the next 24 hours, thereby bringing the total number of vaccines donated to the country by the US to six million.
Along with the additional vaccines, the US will also provide a sum of US$23 million from the American Rescue Plan and emergency funding through the Centers for Disease Control and the United States Agency for International Development to help the nation expand distribution and access to vaccines. This will serve to combat the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare the country for the possibility of future disease threats. The Defense Department is also delivering 77 freezers in order to store vaccine doses throughout the country.
She also announced the launch of a new Southeast Asian office for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The new CDC office will be one of four regional offices based globally, with its primary focus on collaborating with regional governments on issues relating to research and training as a means of dealing with and preventing global health crises.
This announcement comes amid the country grappling with record high COVID-19 infections driven by the spread of the Delta variant, coupled with low vaccination rates nationwide. The latest surge in cases has prompted a recent lockdown in Ho Chi Minh City, the nation’s business hub and the epicentre of the latest outbreak.
