Nation seeks closer co-operation to deal with security challenges in CAR, Syria

VOV.VN - Ambassador Pham Hai Anh, deputy permanent representative of Vietnam to the UN, has called for closer co-operation among concerned parties in order to address ongoing security and humanitarian challenges in the Central African Republic (CAR) and Syria.

As part of his address at a meeting of the UN Security Council (UNSC) held on June 23 to discuss the current situation in the CAR, the Vietnamese Ambassador shared the UNSC’s concerns about issues relating to security instability and the serious impacts on recent humanitarian activities in the African country. He also urged all parties to enhance trust building and dialogue activities, as well as boosting regional co-operation to solve common security challenges.

With regard to difficulties facing operations of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the CAR (MINUSCA), Ambassador Anh underlined the need to strengthen co-ordination between field forces for the common goal of restoring peace and promoting development. This should be done whilst creating favourable conditions for the mission, along with ensuring the security and safety of staff.

Mankeur Ndiaye, special representative of the UN Secretary-General for the CAR and head of MINUSCA, briefed participants on the continued instability in the country, stating that certain armed groups seek to oppose the democratic election process.

Issues relating to security instability continue to cause civilian casualties and serious humanitarian consequences, he added.

Participants therefore acknowledged the commitment of the CAR’s Government in promoting dialogue and socio-economic development, whilst also implementing the Peace Agreement.

During the course of a regular meeting of the UNSC held on the same day to discuss the humanitarian situation in Syria, UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Ramesh Rajasingham, acting under-secretary-general for Humanitarian Affairs, informed participants of the difficult situation in Syria. Indeed, citizens there are facing the impact of years of instability and a serious socio-economic crisis coupled with problems caused by the impact of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
