NA Standing Committee meeting reviews election results

VOV.VN - The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee convened its 57th meeting on June 14 under the chair of NA Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, with the purpose of discussing the recent elections.

The primary aim of the meeting is to review the National Election Council (NEC)’s preliminary report which details the outcomes of the elections of deputies to the 15th NA and all-level People’s Councils for the 2021 to 2026 tenure. This is alongside going over preparations for the first sitting of the 15th NA which is set for July 20.

Members of the NA Standing Committee will contribute their opinions for the finalisation of reports regarding the implementation of socio-economic, financial and State budget goals in the first half of the year, and measures for the accomplishments of goals in the remaining months of the year.

Following a report compiled by the NA General Secretary and chief of the NEC Office which summarises the outcomes of the elections, Ha Ngoc Chien, chairman of the NA’s Committee for Ethnic Affairs, welcomed the results of the elections which saw a notably high rate of elected ethnic minority deputies. Indeed, for the first time ever, the 15th NA will have representatives from the Lu and Brau ethnic minority groups, both of which have very small populations, Chien said.

Furthermore, Nguyen Thuy Anh, chairwoman of the NA’s Committee for Social Affairs, took note of the record ratio of women in the 15th NA, which exceeds 30% of the total. This therefore enables the country to climb 20 places to rank 51st globally in the proportion of women parliamentarians, she said.

The nation has also risen to fourth place from ninth in Asia, along with being the first among the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly member states in the relevant rankings, she noted, adding that it marks a remarkable improvement which should be included in the report.

During the two-day meeting, the NA Standing Committee will also adopt the appointment of a new ambassador to Cambodia.
