German Chancellor arrives in Hanoi for official visit to Vietnam

VOV.VN - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz arrived in Hanoi on November 13, beginning a two-day official visit to Vietnam at the invitation of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

The German Chancellor is being accompanied by Secretary of State and Federal Government Spokesman Steffen Hebestreit; Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Franziska Brantner; German Ambassador to Vietnam Guido Hildner; the Chancellor's foreign policy and national security advisor Jens Ploetner; the Chancellor’s economic policy advisor Steffen Meyer, among others.

During the visit, he is scheduled to attend an official welcome ceremony and hold talks with PM Chinh, take part in a press briefing, pay a courtesy call on Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, participate in a roundtable conference with Vietnamese and German enterprises, and attend an official banquet.

Vietnam and Germany established their diplomatic relations on September 23, 1975. Since then, the friendship and cooperation between the two countries have grown in an effective and comprehensive manner.

For many years, Germany has been one of the most important partners of Vietnam in Europe. The mutual trust and understanding between the two nations has been further enhanced through maintaining high-level delegation exchanges and cooperation mechanisms.

During the visit to Vietnam by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel in October 2011, the two countries' PMs signed the Hanoi Joint Statement on the establishment of a strategic partnership, which sets out objectives and specific measures aimed at boosting cooperation in priority areas.

In his inaugural speeches in December  2021 and at the G7 Summit in June, 2022, Prime Minister Scholz highlighted Vietnam as an important and potential partner that Germany desires to strengthen cooperation.

This Vietnam visit by Chancellor Olaf Scholz is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership with Vietnam in the time ahead.
