Politburo decides on Mekong Delta development orientations today

VOV.VN - The Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Vietnam held a national conference in Hanoi on April 22 to outline development orientations for the Mekong Delta region to 2030 with a vision to 2045.

The Mekong Delta, the largest in Southeast Asia and the rice granary of Vietnam, holds a very important geopolitical and security position in the country. It has a unique river civilization, inhabited by more than 17 million people of various ethnic groups such as Kinh, Khmer and Cham.

For its strategic position, the Party and State always pay special attention to the Mekong Delta region by issuing many important documents on the delta’s development. The Party Central Committee in particular issued Resolution No. 21 in January 20, 2003 on orientations, tasks, and solutions for socio-economic development and national defense and security in the Mekong Delta in the 2001-2010 period.

Under the 2003 resolution, Vietnam aimed to build the Mekong Delta into a key economic development region with high, efficient and sustainable economic growth closely linked to ecological environment protection, ensuring political stability, social order, safety and firm national security.

After nearly 20 years of implementing the 2003 resolution, the Politburo unanimously issued a new resolution on orientations of socio-economic development and national defense and security in the Mekong Delta until 2030, with a vision to 2045.

The new resolution sets specific goals, guidelines and solutions to redress weaknesses and remove difficulties in order to create positive changes in socio-economic development and ensure national defense and security in the Mekong Delta in the coming years.
