PM chairs meeting on Vietnam’s COP 26 commitment implementation

VOV.VN - The national steering committee for implementing of Vietnam’s commitments at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) convened its third meeting in Hanoi on July 14 with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in the chair.

During the recent COP26 summit held in Glasgow in the UK late last year, PM Chinh made a commitment that Vietnam will strive to meet the target of achieving net zero emissions by 2050.

The country has since taken steps towards meeting this commitment, with efforts such as establishing a national steering committee for implementing its COP26 commitments, aa well as developing a national strategy on climate change leading towards 2050 which prioritises pooling resources for climate change response and greenhouse gas emission reduction for the stages between 2030 and 2050.

Furthermore, it has constantly updated its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in order to advance socio-economic development by reducing vulnerability to climate change, contributing to the global climate change response, and sustainably making use of natural resources.

Addressing the meeting, PM Chinh stressed that urgently combating climate change is a global issue that requires a global approach. He therefore asked ministries, sectors, and localities to remove difficulties and introduce policies which can facilitate the implementation of Vietnamese commitments at COP26.

It was reported that various ministries have now developed their own plans of action and have signed agreements with international organisations in a bid to implement COP26 commitments. The State Bank of Vietnam has actively worked alongside a number of potential banks and international financial institutions to mobilise resources for this endeavor.

Moreover, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has drafted a report on the potential of offshore wind and wave energy development in Vietnamese waters for reference by industries, localities, and businesses. It has also updated the country’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for 2022 and developed the nation’s adaptation plan report in line with the ‘net zero emissions’ roadmap that will be sent to the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change before the COP27 conference takes place in Egypt in November.
