Vietnam welcomes Global Methane Pledge initiative

VOV.VN - Vietnam welcomes the Global Methane Pledge initiative, considering it a right choice and the fastest, most cost-effective and beneficial solution to the current climate emergency, says Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

PM Chinh was speaking at a launch ceremony of the Global Methane Pledge imitative co-chaired by US President Joe Biden and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Glasgow, the UK, on November 2.

He pointed out that methane is a result of unscientific and unsustainable production that requires all countries to join hands to reduce methane emissions.

This is a global issue that affects every people, and therefore an all-people approach is needed, he stressed.

Chinh called on countries to develop a roadmap with specific, comprehensive and highly practical solutions, and to activate all mechanisms of the Paris Agreement, including a transparent mechanism and a credit exchange market.

He suggested that developed countries, especially the United States and the European Union share and support developing and poor countries in accessing financial sources, advanced technology and management to transition to a green, circular, low-carbon economy.

He also proposed to shorten the gaps between emission reduction commitments and development levels of countries in order to achieve carbon neutrality for the safety of the Earth and the prosperity and happiness of future generations.

Chinh noted that Vietnam’s participation in the Global Methane Pledge initiative in line with the country’s strategic orientation and the global trend for sustainable development.

Cooperation activities within the Pledge will create conditions for Vietnam to strengthen international cooperation in finance, technology transfer and capacity building, contributing to improving the competitiveness of the economy, through the application of new technologies on low methane emissions in particular and greenhouse gas emissions in general, he said.

The Global Methane Pledge is an international initiative put forward by the US and EU to reduce methane emissions. World leaders have to cut methane emission levels by 30% by 2030 as part of efforts to tackle the climate crisis at the 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow. To date, nearly 80 countries have joined this initiative.

Earlier, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the Leaders Action on Forests and Land Use session chaired by UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

By adopting the Declaration, more than 100 leaders were committed to halting and reversing deforestation and land degradation by 2030, contributing to the goal of keeping global temperature rise at 1.5°C, and at the same time supporting sustainable development, equitable transition in rural areas through specific actions, suitable to national conditions and circumstances.
