Vietnam, Uruguay deepen ties, boost Southeast Asia-Latin America connectivity

The agreement was reached during a meeting in Hanoi on August 17 between Le Hoai Trung, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Vietnam, and Valeria Csukasi Cabrera Deputy Foreign Minister of Uruguay, who is visiting and working in Vietnam from August 16 to 18.

The two sides pledged to coordinate preparations for high-level visits and exchanges and strengthen links between their political parties, legislatures and government agencies.

Information sharing, business connections and cooperation between trade promotion agencies were also identified as important areas for expanding economic, trade and investment ties.

Trung proposed that the two countries make greater use of their respective roles as bridges in relations with regional institutions such as the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR), and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), thereby promoting interregional cooperation and strengthening connectivity between Southeast Asia and Latin America.

The two sides also agreed to promote cooperation between their legislatures, increase exchanges between parliamentary bodies and enhance the role of friendship parliamentarian groups.

The Uruguay side also expressed interest in strengthening links between business communities and trade promotion agencies in the two countries.

Trung noted that Vietnam-Uruguay relations have continued to make positive progress, particularly through high-level exchanges, bilateral cooperation mechanisms and mutual support at multilateral forums.

Bilateral trade has also grown rapidly, although there remains considerable room for expansion in line with the two countries’ potential.

The Vietnamese minister emphasised the need to turn cooperation orientations and potential into tangible results, particularly by strengthening business links and promoting trade and investment.

For her part, Deputy Foreign Minister Valeria Csukasi Cabrera said Uruguay attaches particular importance to enhancing relations with Vietnam amid an increasingly complex and unpredictable international environment.

Uruguay is ready to work with Vietnam to elevate bilateral relations through concrete steps while also increasing interregional cooperation, she said.

Uruguay also expressed interest in expanding cooperation in combating transnational crime, culture and sports. Football, in particular, is seen as a potential channel for people-to-people exchanges, closer connections and stronger friendship between the two countries.

During her visit, Cabrera also held talks with Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang on measures to promote cooperation in politics and diplomacy, economic and trade ties, investment, multilateral cooperation, culture, education, tourism and sports. They also shared views on regional and international issues of mutual interest.

She also met with the Chairman of the Vietnam-Uruguay Friendship Parliamentarian Group and officials from the Ministry of Public Security, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, as well as representatives of several Vietnamese businesses.

The visit comes as Vietnam and Uruguay seek to expand cooperation through both bilateral and multilateral channels, with significant potential for trade, investment and stronger links between the two regions.

Communist Party of Uruguay bolsters cooperation with Vietnam
