Vietnam seeks IMF support for centenary development goal
VOV.VN - A senior Vietnamese leader expressed Vietnam’s desire to receive additional support from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to realize its centenary development goal in the coming years during a meeting in New York on September 24 with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.
At the meeting, General Secretary and President To Lam praised the financial institution’s important role in monitoring macroeconomic stability and giving countries advice on policy-making to stabilize financial and monetary systems, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable, balanced, and inclusive economic growth while addressing climate change.
From a backward economy, he said Vietnam has now emerged among the 40 largest economies in the world, and it is now working towards significant milestones such as the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam in 2030 and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnamese state in 2045 to become a developed and high income economy.
To Lam requested that the IMF continue to support Vietnam in realizing this vision, promote economic restructuring, innovate the growth model, digital transformation, green transition, and develop new technologies, including artificial intelligence, while ensuring social security and poverty reduction.
Vietnam is committed to continuing to play a responsible role in addressing global issues, working towards a peaceful and prosperous world, he told the IMF Managing Director.
Georgieva for her part affirmed that Vietnam and ASEAN are bright spots for growth in the global economy, especially during challenging times when the world economy faces shocks.
She noted that Vietnam’s resilience, adaptability, and sustained growth are based on two solid pillars that have been continuously reinforced over decades. They are a strong, increasingly sophisticated institution and a growth-oriented approach that still ensures inclusiveness in macroeconomic policy-making.
The Managing Director expressed her hope that Vietnam can share its experiences and success stories with other countries, particularly partners in the African region.
Kristalina emphasized that the IMF is a good friend and a supportive partner for Vietnam in enhancing the quality of growth. She pledged to further support Vietnam in realizing its development goal in the upcoming phase by promoting reforms and risk management, aiming to become a developed, high-income country by 2045.
