Vietnam seeks deeper JBIC support for strategic industries, green growth
VOV.VN - Vietnam and the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) will enhance cooperation in strategic industries, green growth and infrastructure development as Vietnam seeks to attract more private capital and advanced technologies.
The two sides will also expand bilateral cooperation in line with Vietnam's long-term development priorities, including industrial upgrading, innovation and energy transition.
The agreement was reached during Prime Minister Le Minh Hung’s reception in Hanoi on July 2 for Governor Maeda Tadashi.
Prime Minister Hung described JBIC as not only Vietnam's longstanding development finance partner but also an increasingly important source of funding for strategic infrastructure, green rtansition and innovation projects.
He said Vietnam sees significant potential to deepen cooperation with Japan, particularly as the country seeks to attract greater private investment and high-value technologies.
He encouraged JBIC to explore more flexible financing mechanisms, including investment guarantees and co-financing arrangements, to support the development of industrial clusters, innovation hubs and high-tech manufacturing facilities in Vietnam.
Priority sectors, according to the PM, are semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), batteries, advanced materials, critical minerals and other high-tech industries, which Vietnam considers key drivers of future economic growth.
The Prime Minister also called on JBIC to continue supporting major infrastructure and energy projects, including the Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Complex, while considering greater flexibility in financing procedures for other ongoing projects.
He expressed hope that JBIC would play a larger role in regional energy and resource cooperation initiatives, helping strengthen Vietnam's economic resilience amid growing global uncertainties.
For his part, JBIC Governor Maeda reaffirmed Vietnam’s position as one of the most important investment destinations for Japanese businesses and expressed the bank's willingness to expand practical cooperation.
He said JBIC would accelerate projects under the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) initiative, with planned investments totaling around US$20 billion, focusing on energy, oil and gas, and regional energy security.
Maeda also highlighted JBIC’s interest in emerging sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centres, innovation-driven start-ups and the development of the international financial centre in Vietnam.
