Vietnam – Malaysia partnership develops substantially, says diplomat

VOV.VN - Speaking at a banquet held in Kuala Lumpur on September 1 evening to mark 77 years of Vietnam’s National Day, Vietnamese Ambassador Tran Viet Thai affirmed the strategic partnership between Vietnam and Malaysia is developing strongly across all fields.

He said Malaysia Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob conducted a successful visit to Vietnam in March 2022, giving a fresh impetus to the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Malaysia is currently the 10th largest foreign investor in Vietnam with an investment capital of US$12.98 billion in nearly 700 projects. It is the second largest trading partner of Vietnam in ASEAN. Their two-way trade turnover reached US$12.5 billion last year, up 25.3% over the same period in 2020. The two countries are striving to raise their bilateral trade to US$18 billion in the coming time.

Vietnam and Malaysia are not only close bilateral partners, but also multilateral partners in both ASEAN and other international forums, as they both share the same goal of solving regional and global challenges, and working towards better economic recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, said the Ambassador.

He also briefed participants on Vietnam’s recent achievements, saying the country has brought the COVID-19 pandemic under control and put its economy back on track. It secured GDP growth of 6.4% in the first half of the year and is expected to expand by 7.8% by the end of the year – the fastest since 1998.

The economy, which is strongly recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic fetched US$431.94 billion in trade value in the first seven months, up 14.8% year on year, and attracted US$11.57 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI). Since the reopening of its borders in mid-March 2022, Vietnam has also welcomed nearly 1.5 million international visitors.

With all the efforts over the years, Vietnam has been recognized by world friends as an open and dynamic economy, a reliable friend and partner, said the diplomat.

Addressing the function, Malaysia Minister of Home Affairs Hamzah Zainuddin warmly congratulated the Government and people of Vietnam on the 77th National Day. He also expressed his delight at the great achievements and extensive development in all fields in the partnership between Vietnam and Malaysia over the past 50 years.

On this occasion, the Vietnamese Embassy in Malaysia displayed photos featuring Vietnam’s achievements in national development and international integration, as well as the Vietnam-Malaysia strategic partnership.
