Vietnam congratulates Cuba on 73rd anniversary of Moncada Barracks attack

VOV.VN - Vietnam's top leaders have sent congratulatory messages to their Cuban counterparts on the 73rd anniversary of the Moncada Barracks attack, reaffirming the two countries' longstanding friendship and comprehensive cooperation.

According to Vietnam's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Party General Secretary and State President To Lam sent a congratulatory message to Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of Cuba.

Prime Minister Le Minh Hung extended congratulations to Cuban Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, while National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man sent greetings to Esteban Lazo Hernández, President of Cuba's National Assembly of People's Power.

On the same occasion, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung also sent a congratulatory message to Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla.

On July 26, 1953, a group of young revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro launched coordinated attacks on the Moncada Barracks in Santiago de Cuba and the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks in Bayamo in an effort to overthrow the government of Fulgencio Batista.

Although the operation was unsuccessful militarily, it is widely regarded in Cuba as the event that marked the beginning of the Cuban Revolution.

The ideals of the July 26 Movement, established in the aftermath of the attack, later inspired revolutionary and national liberation movements across Latin America.

Following the victory of the Cuban Revolution on January 1, 1959, July 26 was designated National Rebellion Day (Día de la Rebeldía Nacional), one of Cuba's most important national commemorations.

Beyond its historical significance for Cuba, the Moncada Barracks attack has come to symbolise the pursuit of national independence, sovereignty and social justice throughout Latin America.

For Vietnam, the anniversary also reflects the enduring friendship between the two countries, forged during their respective struggles for national independence and strengthened through decades of political, economic and people-to-people cooperation.
