Vietnam attaches importance to relations with Cambodia
VOV.VN - Vietnam gives a high priority to the good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive and long-term cooperation with Cambodia.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang made the statement at a regular press briefing in Hanoi on November 19, following recent news on western media saying China is moving closer to China.
Hang affirmed Vietnam’s desire to make bilateral relationship with Cambodia increasingly practical and effective in the interest of the two peoples.
According to the spokesperson, the Vietnam-Cambodia relations have developed very positively over the years.
Before the COVID-19 epidemic broke out, the two sides had exchanged many important high-level delegations, including a State-level visit to Cambodia by General Secretary and President Nguyen Phu Trong in February 2019, and two Vietnam visits by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen in December 2018 and October 2019, Hang said.
The two countries held a solemn ceremony to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the victory of the South-western border defence war and the joint Vietnam-Cambodia victory over the genocidal regime on January 7, 2019.
Leaders of both countries also regularly held phone talks to discuss about COVID-19 prevention measures, and ways to maintain border trade between the two countries.
Cooperation efforts have paid off in various areas, especially in economics, trade and investment, said Hang.
In 2018 and 2019, Vietnam and Cambodia signed 21 cooperation documents, including a Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Treaty on the Delimitation of National Boundaries and the 2005 Supplementary Treaty, as well as a protocol on land border demarcation and marker planting between the two nations.
Most recently, they handed over border topographic maps to their ministries, sectors and agencies in November 2020.
During the recent battle against COVID-19, the Vietnamese Government, ministries, sectors and localities provided Cambodia with medical equipment to share its difficulties.
The spokesperson affirmed Vietnam has always maintained cooperation in all fields with Cambodia and collaborated closely with its neighbor at regional and international forums in addressing regional issues of mutual concern.
