Vietnam and France step up defence cooperation, parliamentary ties
VOV.VN - Vietnam and France have agreed to further strengthen defence-security cooperation and expand ties between their legislative bodies in an effort to concretise the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership framework between the two countries.
The agreement was discussed during a meeting in Hanoi on June 2 between Vietnamese National Assembly Vice Chairman Sen. Lieu. Gen. Nguyen Doan Anh and Jean Michel Jacques, Chairman of the French National Assembly’s Committee on National Defense and the Armed Forces.
Both sides were of the view that Vietnam-France relations have continued to develop positively across multiple fields, particularly after the two countries upgraded ties to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in October 2024.
The new partnership framework is regarded as an important milestone, opening broader opportunities for cooperation in politics, economy, defence, security and people-to-people exchanges, they said.
Anh highly appreciated the growing cooperation between specialised agencies of Vietnam’s National Assembly and France’s National Assembly, describing it as an important foundation for enhancing mutual understanding, political trust and practical cooperation, especially in defence and security.
Vietnam highly values France’s role and position in Europe and the Indo-Pacific region, Anh told his guest.
France is currently one of Vietnam’s leading partners within the European Union and the first EU country to establish a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Vietnam.
For his part, Jacques said the visit aimed to further promote bilateral cooperation and expressed France’s desire to expand collaboration in defence and security while strengthening exchanges between friendship parliamentarians’ groups of both countries.
Amid increasingly complex regional and global developments, he stressed the need for the two countries to maintain dialogue and coordination while making full use of existing cooperation mechanisms.
To effectively implement the upgraded partnership framework, both sides agreed to maintain high-level exchanges, strengthen cooperation between specialised committees, friendship parliamentarians’ groups, women parliamentarians and young lawmakers. They also pledged to enhance coordination at multilateral parliamentary forums.
