Vietnam and Czech Republic to work towards new relationship framework

VOV.VN - Vietnam and the Czech Republic have agreed to work towards new relationship framework to comprehensively promote bilateral cooperation.

The agreement was reached during Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son’s meeting with Czech Senate President Milos Vystricil and talks with Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky in Prague on June 9.

Son affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to and wishes to strengthen the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation with the Czech Republic.

He suggested that the two countries continue promoting cooperation in all fields, especially in trade - investment, science - technology, education - training, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.

The Czech leaders affirmed that Vietnam is the most important partner for the Czech Republic in Southeast Asia. They lauded Vietnam’s increasingly important position and role globally as well as its socio-economic development achievements over recent years.

The two sides shared the view that both Vietnam and the Czech Republic have maintained regular visit exchanges and contacts despite global complications, especially the April 2023 Vietnam visit by Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala, helping to increase political trust and creating a driving force for cooperation in all fields.

They noted with satisfaction the growing trade ties between the two countries thanks to the enforcement of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA). Last year saw their two-way trade turnover hit US$848 million, representing an increase of nearly 15% compared to 2021.

The two sides agreed to effectively take advantage of EVFTA opportunities, facilitate market access for their export products, and enhance the efficiency of the Vietnam – Caech Republic Intergovernmental Committee on economic cooperation.

The Czech side acknowledged Son’s proposal to lobby other EU countries to soon ratify the EU - Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA). They also pledged to lobby the European Commission to soon remove the IUU yellow card for Vietnamese seafood exported into EU.

The two sides also discussed measures to expand cooperation in the fields of security - defense, education - training, labour, science - technology, culture and tourism.

With regard to international cooperation, both sides agreed to strengthen close coordination and mutual support at multilateral organizations and forums, especially at the United Nations, Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), and within the framework of the ASEAN – EU Strategic Partnership.

They shared their stance on the East Sea issue by settling disputes through peaceful means on the basis of international law and the United Nations Charter, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea UNCLOS).

Son thanked the Czech Government for creating favourable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live and do business stably and successfully integrate in their host country.

He took the occasion to cordially invite Lipavsky to pay an official visit to Vietnam, and the invitation was accepted with pleasure.

During his June 9-10 visit, Minister Son also met with the staff of the Vietnamese Embassy and representatives of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic.
