US Congress supports stronger cooperation with Vietnam

VOV.VN - Both houses of the US Congress support stronger cooperation between Vietnam and the US, senators told Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during their meeting in Washington DC on September 19.

Senators Bob Menendez, Jim Risch and others of the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations welcomed the recent upgrade of Vietnam – US relations to the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace, cooperation and sustainable development, which they said would lay the foundation for the two countries to further develop their relations, bringing practical benefits to the two peoples.

They highly appreciated the socio-economic achievements that Vietnam has recorded in recent times, with an increasingly important role and voice in the region.

They agreed that the two sides need to further strengthen cooperation in key areas, such as economy, trade, high technology, education - training, human resource development, climate change response, settlement of war consequences and people-to-people exchanges.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh for his part reaffirmed that Vietnam considers the US a strategically important partner, and the recent lifting of bilateral relations to the comprehensive strategic partnership during President Joe Biden’s visit to Hanoi would open up a new chapter for strengthening bilateral cooperation in all fields, including cooperation between the two countries’ parliaments.

He thanked the US Senate, and the Committee on Foreign Relations in particular, for supporting and promoting Vietnam-US relations over the past years, including resolving war consequences.

He emphasized that the support and cooperation of the legislatures of the two countries plays an important role in concretizing new frameworks and areas of cooperation in the comprehensive strategic partnership in the coming time.

The PM expressed his wish that the US Senate Committee on Foreign Relations would support the two countries in further enhancing cooperation in economy, trade, investment, science-technology, innovation, semiconductor production, energy conversion, climate change response, as well as in settling war aftermath.

The two sides discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern. They agreed to increase the central role of ASEAN, promote the ASEAN-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, and strengthen further the Mekong-US Partnership.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh was in the US for the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
