UK eyes investment in Vietnam’s energy and green transition projects
VOV.VN - British investors are showing growing interest in Vietnam’s energy and green transition sectors, UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Equalities Seema Malhotra said during her meeting with Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung in Hanoi on June 10.
Malhotra noted that Vietnam has emerged as an increasingly attractive destination for British businesses thanks to its strong economic growth, expanding market and commitment to sustainable development. She said UK investors are particularly interested in opportunities related to renewable energy, green transition and climate-resilient infrastructure.
The UK official reaffirmed Britain’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s implementation of the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP), including efforts to improve regulatory frameworks and mobilise international private-sector investment for low-carbon development projects.
She also expressed Britain’s desire to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including politics, diplomacy, trade, investment, science and technology, education, training and green growth.
For his part, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung reaffirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to its relationship with the United Kingdom and views the country as one of its key partners in Europe.
He told his guest that the two countries still have substantial room to expand cooperation in trade and investment, finance, science and technology, education and training, tourism, renewable energy and green transition.
The Vietnamese official called for stronger trade and investment promotion efforts and broader market access for goods from both countries, with the goal of raising bilateral trade turnover to US$10 billion this year.
Vietnam is ready to facilitate long-term and effective investment by British businesses, particularly in strategic infrastructure projects capable of generating broad economic benefits, he said.
Both sides agreed to strengthen economic cooperation through enhanced connectivity among investment funds, support for the development of international financial centres and closer collaboration in critical minerals.
They also pledged to continue promoting open and rules-based global trade amid ongoing uncertainties in the global economy.
In the field of education and training, Vietnam and the UK agreed to ramp up cooperation among leading universities, research institutes and experts. Britain asserted its willingness to support Vietnam in developing a highly skilled workforce in priority sectors.
The UK also expressed support for Vietnam’s efforts to strengthen English-language education and advance its long-term goal of making English a second language in schools.
Beyond bilateral ties, the two sides exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Trung thanked the UK for sending a senior representative to the ASEAN Future Forum and welcomed efforts to further deepen ASEAN–UK relations as the two sides mark five years of their Dialogue Partnership.
He voiced Vietnam’s commitment to fulfilling its role as ASEAN–UK Country Coordinator for the 2024–2027 period.
Both sides agreed to strengthen political trust through high-level exchanges, accelerate the development of an action plan for implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and make full use of existing cooperation mechanisms, including the deputy foreign minister-level strategic dialogue.
They also pledged to continue close coordination in multilateral forums, particularly within the United Nations and ASEAN–UK frameworks, while supporting dialogue, adherence to international law, peaceful settlement of disputes, freedom of navigation, energy security and resilient global supply chains.
