Top leader To Lam reaffirms deeper Vietnam-Malaysia ties
VOV.VN - Party General Secretary and State President To Lam has voiced Vietnam's commitment to deepening its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with Malaysia, calling for closer cooperation in both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.
Receiving outgoing Malaysian Ambassador Tan Yang Thai in Hanoi on August 5, the top Vietnamese leader described Malaysia as one of Vietnam's important partners and expressed his hope that bilateral relations would continue to develop in a substantive and comprehensive manner.
He commended the Ambassador’s contributions to strengthening bilateral ties during his tenure and wished him continued success in his future assignments.
Reviewing recent developments in bilateral relations, the leader noted that exchanges between the two countries have been active across Party, State, Government and parliamentary channels, while bilateral cooperation mechanisms and people-to-people exchanges have continued to expand.
Economic cooperation has been a highlight, with two-way trade hitting US$10.8 billion in the first six months of 2026, up 40% from the same period last year.
Malaysia is currently ASEAN’s third-largest investor in Vietnam and ranks 10th among 154 countries and territories investing in the country.
The top Vietnamese leader said both sides still have significant room to expand cooperation in emerging sectors, including the digital economy, green growth, energy connectivity, science and technology, innovation and maritime cooperation.
He called for stronger political trust, more high-level exchanges and effective implementation of bilateral agreements, alongside promoting balanced and sustainable cooperation in defence, security, trade and investment.
For his part, Ambassador Tan Yang Thai said he was pleased to have witnessed Vietnam's remarkable development during his tenure and would always cherish his memories of the country and its people.
He reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to strengthening cooperation with Vietnam, particularly in the digital economy, green growth and renewable energy.
The ambassador also expressed confidence that both countries would continue working closely to promote a united and resilient ASEAN while supporting the peaceful settlement of disputes in accordance with international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
He also conveyed an invitation from the King of Malaysia for the Vietnamese leader to visit Malaysia at an early date, and pledged to continue contributing to the friendship and cooperation between the two countries in whatever role he undertakes.
