President arrives in Tokyo to attend late PM Shinzo Abe’s funeral

VOV.VN - President Nguyen Xuan Phuc arrived in Tokyo on September 25 afternoon to attend the state funeral of late Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Phuc was accompanied by a number of Party Central Committee members and officials of several ministries in charge of foreign affairs, planning and investment, trade and industry, and labour and social affairs.  

During the September 25 – 28 trip, the Vietnamese State President will attend the funeral, and meet the family of late Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Japanese leaders and leaders of several countries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At a recent press conference, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Le Thi Thu Hang said that President Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s attendance at the funeral showed Vietnam’s respect and recognition of Abe’s contributions to promoting the two countries’ relations, as well as affirming the importance of the extensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan.

Shinzo Abe, 67, passed away on July 8 after being shot from behind while campaigning for a candidate of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party in the city of Nara, east of Osaka.

He was Japan's longest-serving Prime Minister. He served as the PM from 2006 to 2007 and again from 2012 to 2020.
