PM Lee Hsien Loong to visit Vietnam in second half 2023

VOV.VN - Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will visit Vietnam in the second half of this year to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties and 10 years of the strategic partnership between the two countries this year.

Lee was speaking during his meeting with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh on the sidelines of the 42nd ASEAN Summit which is getting underway in Indonesia on May 10.

The two sides agreed to maintain visit exchanges to increase political trust and to organize practical activities to celebrate joint anniversaries this year. They vowed to realise joint commitments, especially in the areas of economy, trade and investment, during Chinh’s Singapore visit in February 2023.  

Lee agreed with Chinh’s proposal to promote the effective implementation of the newly established Digital Economy - Green Economy Partnership, including setting up an interdisciplinary agency in each country to discuss this issue, and implementing the February 2022 Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of digital economy.

The two sides consented to ramp up cooperation in new fields such as digital economy, green economy, and green energy, in order to meet their net zero emissions commitments by 2050.

They also agreed to soon amend and upgrade the 2005 connectivity framework agreement between the two economies, and strengthen cooperation in the field of e-commerce.

The two PMs highly appreciated the Vietnam – Singapore Industrial Park (VSIP) Group signing an MoU on cooperation in developing smart and sustainable industrial parks with nine provinces and cities in Vietnam.

Chinh expressed hope that the new generation VSIPs would bring into full play their potential, creating a new driving force for growth in both countries.

The two sides also agreed to further promote cooperation in other fields such as security, defense, education and training, and development of high-quality human resources, including running training courses for senior Vietnamese officials in Singapore.

Exchanging views on regional and international issues, the two leaders underlined the need to further strengthen cooperation, maintain solidarity and promote the central role of ASEAN, while supporting each other’s candidacy at international organizations and the United Nations.
