Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to pay official visit to Vietnam
VOV.VN - Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing and his spouse will pay an official visit to Vietnam from September 4 to 6 at the invitation of General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam and his spouse.
The visit comes shortly after Vietnam and Myanmar held the 10th meeting of the Joint Committee for Bilateral Cooperation in Naypyidaw on August 26, during Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung’s official visit to Myanmar.
At the meeting, the two sides reviewed bilateral cooperation since the ninth meeting in 2019 and agreed on new directions to deepen and make their comprehensive cooperative partnership more substantive.
They also agreed to strengthen cooperation through Party, State, Government, parliamentary and local channels, as well as people-to-people exchanges, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the establishment of the comprehensive cooperative partnership framework in 2027.
Boosting trade, investment and emerging areas of cooperation
Economic cooperation has been identified as one of the areas requiring new momentum in bilateral relations.
During the August 26 discussions, Vietnam and Myanmar agreed to soon convene the 11th meeting of the joint trade committee to address difficulties, seek measures to boost bilateral trade and work toward a target of US$1 billion in two-way trade.
The two sides also encouraged greater investment cooperation and efforts to capitalise on the complementary strengths of their economies. Improving trade and investment ties is seen as part of broader efforts to make bilateral economic cooperation more substantive.
Defence and security cooperation will also be strengthened through exchanges of delegations, training, young officers’ exchanges, military cultural and sports activities, as well as cooperation in search and rescue, disaster relief, bomb and mine clearance, humanitarian assistance and military medicine.
Myanmar also reaffirmed its commitment to working with Vietnam to combat drug-related and cybercrime.
Vietnam-Myanmar ties enter a new chapter
Vietnam and Myanmar established diplomatic relations on May 28, 1975. The relationship was elevated to a comprehensive cooperation partnership in 2017, providing a framework for expanded cooperation across a wide range of areas.
The two countries have a long-standing foundation of friendship dating back to the early years after their independence. President Ho Chi Minh and Prime Minister U Nu exchanged visits in the 1950s, helping lay the groundwork for relations between the two countries.
In recent years, Vietnam and Myanmar have maintained exchanges and cooperation through bilateral mechanisms as well as within the ASEAN framework.
Vietnam has affirmed that Myanmar is an ASEAN member and that it stands ready to work with ASEAN in supporting the country’s economic recovery, addressing social issues and combating transnational crime, thereby contributing to peace, stability and development in the region.
The resumption of the 10th meeting of the Joint Committee for Bilateral Cooperation after an extended interruption, followed by President Min Aung Hlaing’s official visit to Vietnam, provides fresh momentum for the two sides to review, advance and concretise cooperation in a range of areas in the new period.
