Canada, Australia confident of stronger cooperation with Vietnam

VOV.VN - Authorities of Canada and Australia expressed their belief in the stronger cooperative ties between their respective countries and Vietnam in separate ceremonies held on September 2 to mark Vietnam’s National Day.

Addressing a ceremony held by the Vietnamese Consulate General in Vancouver (British Columbia), Bruce Raston, a member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, affirmed the cooperative relationship between Canada in general and British Columbia in particular with Vietnam has developed positively, especially in the fields of economy, trade and education – training.

Vietnam is an important partner of Canada in the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership in the Indo-Pacific region and one of the strategic trading partners for British Columbia in particular and Canada in general in Southeast Asia, he said.

Between 2017 and 2021, British Columbia’s exports of softwood lumber to Vietnam increased by 59%. Seaports in Ho Chi Minh City and Hai Phong of Vietnam play an important role in connecting supply chains between North America and Southeast Asia, through shipping links with the Port of Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert.

The legislator expressed his belief that the good relationship between Vietnam and British Columbia would further develop in the near future, in line with the Vietnam – Canada Comprehensive Partnership and towards the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In his remarks, Vietnamese Consul General Nguyen Quang Trung noted despite the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the two-way trade turnover between Vietnam and Canada still reached more than CAD10 billion (or more than US$7.6 billion), of which the trade value between Vietnam and British Columbia fetched CAD2.5 billion. As of June 2022, the Vietnam-Canada trade turnover rose 25% year on year to CAD6.1 billion.

Vietnam has more than 20,000 students studying at Canadian training institutions. The Vietnamese community in Canada in general and in Western Canada in particular, has been actively integrating into the local community.

At another ceremony held in Sydney (Australia), Scott Farlow, a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council, extended greetings to Vietnam on the occasion of the 77th National Day.

He affirmed that the relationship between Australia and Vietnam in general and the state of New South Wales in particular, has been developing sustainably and would continue to be further strengthened on the basis of mutual understanding and respect.

New South Wales wishes to continue to promote cooperation opportunities with Vietnam in all fields from politics and trade to culture and education, he said.
