Deputy PM’s bilateral activities on sidelines of the UN 2023 Water Conference

VOV.VN - Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha is leading a Vietnamese delegation to attend and conduct bilateral activities with world leaders countries on the sidelines of the UN 2023 Water Conference, which is underway in New York from March 22 to March 24.

During the conference Deputy PM Tran Hong Ha held a host of meetings alongside Dutch King Willem-Alexander Claus George Ferdinand, UN Secretary General António Guterres, US Secretary of the Interior Debra Haaland, Singaporean Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu Grace Fu, and Indian minister of Drinking Water and Sanitation Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

During the meeting with the King Willem-Alexander, Deputy PM Ha expressed great appreciation for the initiative and efforts shown by the Dutch King in organizing and co-chairing this important conference which was first held back in 1977.

He expressed his wish that the Royal Family and the King personally continue to support the comprehensive promotion of ties between the two countries, including financial support and technology transfer to the Vietnamese side in the fields of green transformation and renewable energy, water resource management, and climate change response.

In return, the King of the Netherlands expressed his willingness to support the Vietnamese side in the process of green transition, including effective management and use of water resources.

At the meeting with the UN Secretary-General, Deputy PM Ha said the Vietnamese side desires to continue receiving the UN's support in terms of technical advice, expertise, financial resources, and technology, as well as helping the nation to realize sustainable development goals, respond to climate change, and ensure water security.

He therefore asked the UN to support Mekong River Basin countries in ensuring the sustainable use and management of water resources and enhancing their ability to respond to the threat posed by climate change.

The UN chief highlighted Vietnam as an exemplary model and reliable partner of the UN, adding that the country’s progress and strong commitments in responding to climate change can be fully replicated, thereby enabling other countries to learn from the Vietnamese example.

UN Secretary General Guterres affirmed that his organization will continue to actively promote the reform of international economic and financial institutions as a way of bettering ensuring the interests of developing nations.

At the meeting with the US Secretary of the Interior, Deputy PM Ha requested that the US move to increase support for the country in building and managing a database system on water resources and early warning on water resources; address water management in the Mekong region; and strengthen co-operation in renewable energy, education, and social security.

Minister Haaland affirmed that the US side views Vietnam as an important partner in the region, while emphasising that they will intensify support for the country in the fields of water management, biodiversity conservation, education, and training.

Meeting with Singaporean Minister Fu, the Vietnamese Deputy PM suggested the two sides develop a plan on specific co-operation activities, particularly working together in the implementation of commitments regarding climate change and water, as well as encouraging Singaporean investors in the Vietnamese market to use cutting-edge and low-carbon technologies.

For her part, Minister Fu congratulated Vietnam on its various achievements, especially its efforts in sustainable development, green transition, and climate change response. The Singaporean side agreed to strengthen co-operation in natural resources management, climate change response, and energy transition.

At the meeting with Indian Minister Shekhawat, the Deputy PM suggested that the two countries ramp up ties and exchange experience in water resources management, climate change response, natural disaster warnings, hydrometeorology, and green energy.

Minister Shekhawat voiced his hope that the two sides will effectively implement the signed co-operation agreements, especially those relating to water resources, climate, as well as natural disasters and flood warnings.
