VOV.VN - Brunei Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof has congratulated Vietnam for fulfilling its term as Chair of ASEAN in 2020, especially its role in leading the regional bloc to overcome unprecedented difficulties and challenges.

During his phone talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh on January 19, the Bruneian diplomat shared an array of directions and priorities during the year Brunei serves as Chair of ASEAN in 2021 under the theme “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper”, including initiatives on COVID-19 response and post-pandemic recovery which were adopted in 2020, the building of a vision for ASEAN after 2025, and the promotion of multilateral cooperation, a rule-based regional order, and people-oriented cooperative ideas.

Those priorities and initiatives are developed based on the achievements ASEAN has recorded over the past years, particularly in 2020 under the Chair of Vietnam, he added.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, in turn, affirmed Vietnam’s readiness to support and work closely with Brunei as Chair of ASEAN in 2021 with a view to successfully carrying out set targets and initiatives.

The pair agreed that both nations need to further enhance closer coordination to reinforce intra-bloc solidarity and unity, and strengthen the bloc’s resilience and central role for peace, security and prosperity in the region amid complicated developments globally and huge challenges and consequences caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
