Harris on August 24 evening arrives in Hanoi, Vietnam, the second stopover on her first Southeast Asia tour since taking office. She is welcomed at Noi Bai International Airports by a number of Vietnamese officials, including Le Khanh Hai, chairman of the Presidential Office. During her meeting with Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan on August 25, Harris expresses her delight at the visit, saying the relationship between the US and Vietnam has gone through a long process to achieve the present-day results. The same day, Harris meets with State President Nguyen Xuan Phuc to discuss issues related to the US - Vietnam relations as well as regional issues of mutual concern. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also receives VP Harris at the Government Office in Hanoi. Harris announces that the US has decided to donate one million doses of the Pfizer vaccine to Vietnam, raising its vaccine donations to 6 million doses. Also on August 25, VP Kamala Harris lays flowers in memory of Senator John McCain on Thanh Nien Street. McCain’s jet was shot down in Hanoi in October 1967 during the Vietnam War, and he served in prison for five years before being released under the 1973 Paris Agreement. He had made great contributions to the US-Vietnam relations after both countries normalized relations in 1995. She attends the opening ceremony of the Southeast Asia Regional Office of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Hanoi on August 25. This is one of the four CDC regional offices globally, that is focused on partnering with regional governments in research and training to respond to and prevent global health crises. On August 26, Harris twits that she is proud of new progress that both the United States and Vietnam are making together following a series of productive meetings with Vietnamese leaders. VP Harris exchanges views with Dr. Dang Duc Anh, director of the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology when she visits the site that receives 270,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine donated by the US. She recalls Vietnam’s assistance given to the US when her country was seriously ravaged by the CVODi1-9 pandemic, sand says now the US can do something to help Vietnam which is battling with the new coronavirus outbreak. At a press briefing on August 26 before leaving Hanoi, Harris affirms that her visit signals the beginning of the next chapter in the relationship between the two countries. She expresses her belief that both countries will strengthen economic position, national security as well as ability to deal with future challenges.
