Exploring Da Lat Railway Station and Vietnam's historic rack railway

Completed in 1938 during the French colonial period, Da Lat Railway Station served as the northern terminus of the 84km long Thap Cham–Da Lat Railway, one of only a handful of rack railways ever constructed worldwide.

For more than a century, Da Lat Railway Station has preserved its timeless charm, with its distinctive architecture and remnants of the historic rack railway, also known as cog railway. Today, it remains both a cherished heritage site and one of Da Lat's most popular attractions.

Designed by French architects Moncet and Reveron, Da Lat Railway Station is one of Vietnam's most distinctive railway landmarks. Its three stylised roofs are inspired by the majestic peaks of Langbiang Mountain while also echoing the traditional communal houses of Vietnam's Central Highlands. Measuring 66.5m long, 11.4m wide and 11m high, the station blends European Art Deco influences with local architectural elements, creating a design that harmonises with Da Lat's mountainous landscape.

Inspired by the peaks of Langbiang Mountain and the traditional Rong communal houses of the Central Highlands, the station's three iconic roofs have become one of Da Lat's defining architectural features. Its large façade clock commemorates the arrival of Dr. Alexandre Yersin, whose discovery paved the way for the development of Da Lat as Vietnam's most famous mountain resort.

Following the departure of the French from Vietnam, the railway continued operating under the South Vietnamese administration. However, escalating conflict increasingly disrupted services, and the line was forced to cease operations in 1972.

According to historical records, the Thap Cham–Da Lat railway project was approved by Governor-General of French Indochina Paul Doumer in the early 20th century. Construction took decades to complete because of the rugged terrain of the Lam Vien Plateau.

The station’s waiting room still preserves many images of the trains and legendary routes of a bygone era.

Saxophonist Tran Vinh performs at Da Lat Railway Station. At 67, he plays the saxophone for visitors out of passion rather than for a living. Originally from a town about 400 kilometers from Da Lat, he has lived and performed in the city for the past six years. According to Vinh, around 90% of the station's visitors are international tourists, with Koreans making up the largest group. Domestic visitors, meanwhile, tend to come on weekends and public holidays.

More than a historic railway station, Da Lat Railway Station has become a symbol of the city itself. Each day, thousands of visitors come to admire its distinctive architecture and experience the timeless charm of one of Vietnam's oldest and most iconic railway stations.

A section of the original cog railway track and one of its cogwheels have been preserved on the station grounds, offering visitors a glimpse into the golden age of the Da Lat railway.

The section of the railway from Song Pha Pass to Dran was built using Swiss-designed cogwheel railway technology. Crossing mountainous terrain with gradients of up to 12% and an elevation gain of nearly 1,000 metres, the line required a special three-rail track system. The centre rail, fitted with teeth, engaged with a cogwheel beneath the locomotive, providing the traction needed to safely climb the steep slopes.

The railway line resumed operations on May 19, 1975. However, most of the Da Lat–Thap Cham route was subsequently dismantled, and the distinctive cogwheel railway sections gradually disappeared.

During its early years of operation, the Thap Cham – Da Lat railway line played a crucial role in transporting passengers and goods, contributing to Da Lat's development into a renowned tourism and resort hub.

Each train consisted of freight carriages and three passenger carriages, catering to the diverse needs of locals and tourists alike. The appearance of the railway line facilitated the arrival of increasing numbers of people to the resort area.

Through his sketches, Van, a local artist, helps visitors preserve beautiful moments whenever they visit Da Lat Railway Station.

Today, visitors can take a scenic train ride of approximately 7km from Da Lat Railway Station to the Trai Mat area. The train leisurely carries passengers past residential neighborhoods, flower gardens, and landscapes of this resort city. The journey’s stop is at Linh Phuoc Pagoda, one of Da Lat's renowned Buddhist landmarks, featuring unique architecture crafted from millions of shards of pottery, porcelain, and glass.
