Pre-Tet demand drives industrial production index up

VOV.VN - The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in January swelled by 20.9% from last year's  same period, primarily driven by the Lunar New Year festival (Tet) businesses’ production enhancement to meet growing pre-Tet demand.

According to the General Statistics Office (GSO), processing and manufacturing surged 23.8% and electricity production and distribution expanded 15.4 %. Mining saw a 10.5% growth while water supply and waste and wastewater treatment increased 6.8% year on year.

High growth rates in January were seen in some industries such as metal ore mining (52.5%), production of electronic products, computers and optical devices (38%), mining of hard coal and lignite (29.1%), metal production (27.1%), apparel production (25.8%), and garments and textiles (23%).

Among localities with a major industrial sector, Da Nang city posted a 48 % rise in its IIP, Bac Ninh province  (47%), Hai Phong city (31%), Quang Ninh province (29%), Quang Nam province (26%), Ho Chi Minh City (15%), and Hanoi (14%).

The Office says since early this month, the numbers of workers in industrial businesses jumped by 4.2% from a year earlier while those in State-owned enterprises dropped by 1.3% and in foreign direct invested enterprises grew by 5.8%.
