Buon Ma Thuot coffee registers geographical indication in EU

(VOV) -The Central Highland province of Dak Lak will register for European Union recognition of the geographical indication (GI) for its Buon Ma Thuot coffee to protect the brand in this large, lucrative market.

Authorized by the provincial People’s Committee, the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association has worked on documentation under the auspices of the European Trade Policy and Investment Support Project (EU-Mutrap), and it is currently putting the final touches to a dossier to be submitted to the EU.

EU experts have organized seminars and training courses, helping Dak Lak cut the timing of the complex process to three year from the current four to five years.

Buon Ma Thuot coffee brand had been used illegally in China by a Chinese company in Guangzhou, and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce revoked this company’s patent early this year.

After the China case, the Buon Ma Thuot Coffee Association has applied for trademark protection in 17 countries and territories around the world.

Currently, Dak Lak’s coffee is exported to 60 countries and territories. The price of coffee products with certified GI is about 15% higher than its noncertified counterpart.
