Vietnamese goods make further inroads into Thai market

VOV.VN - Local goods have continued to make a greater presence within the Thai market thanks to trade promotion connectivity, improved quality and design, as well as catching up with market trends, according to industry insiders.

This comes as Vietnamese longans were being sold at VND96,000 per kilo on November 17 at a food supermarket in Central World in Bangkok.

Paul Le, vice president of Central Retail Vietnam, revealed that 29 Top Mart supermarkets throughout Thailand have recently put longans from Vietnamese localities such as Can Tho and Dong Thap on sale.

Furthermore, some local fruit such as dragon fruit, sweet potato, and other packaged food brands such as Mr.Viet coffee, Bibica, Vifon, Trung Nguyen, Vinamit , Hai Binh cashew nuts, ChinsuFoods, and Vietnamese pepper have also made inroads into the supermarket chain.

Le assessed that after five years of implementing the Vietnam Goods Week programme in the neighbouring country, about 500 local products have been introduced to Thai consumers and linked to modern distribution channels in the market.

The export turnover of Vietnamese goods through Central Retail's system has increased from US$46 million in 2016 to US$205 million in 2019.

Experts have assessed that there are bright prospects ahead for Vietnamese goods particularly as Thai people are increasingly interested in healthy products.

Last year witnessed Thailand become Vietnam's largest trading partner in ASEAN with a record high turnover of US$19 billion, an increase of 18% compared to 2020.

In addition, the opening 10 months of the year saw two-way trade turnover surge by 16.9% to reach US$17.8 billion, while the revenue of Vietnamese exports to Thailand only accounts for about one-third of the figure.

Moreover, during the recent Vietnam's Goods Week held in Thailand, Central Retail Vietnam pledged to support Vietnamese enterprises to get involved in foreign distribution systems and improve their capacity as well as building a network of sustainable suppliers for Central Retail.

Industry insiders have therefore advised local firms to pay greater attention to processed products, as well as issues related to packaging or brand development as a means of making further inroads into the market.
