Vietnamese fruit gains favor among Chinese consumers
VOV.VN - Chinese media has reported that Vietnamese fruit is gaining favor among Chinese consumers as consumer demand rises, cross-border logistics improve and the two countries continue to facilitate trade.
According to the Economic Daily, a wide variety of fruit imported from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including durian, mangosteen and, in particular, Vietnamese lychees, are prominently displayed at wholesale markets and fruit stores in Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, during the summer season, attracting large numbers of consumers. Monthong durian is selling for 20-25 yuan (US$3-3.7) per 500 grams, while mangosteen is priced at 13-16 yuan per 500 grams.
Bordering Vietnam and other ASEAN member states, Guangxi continues to serve as a key gateway for tropical fruit entering the Chinese market. Citing official data, the newspaper reported that one out of every two durians imported into China is cleared through Guangxi's border crossings. Chinese media have also described Vietnamese lychees as one of the country's most popular seasonal fruits. Together with durian, dragon fruit, bananas and other tropical fruit, Vietnamese produce is helping diversify supplies for China's market of more than 1.4 billion people.
According to Zhu Yanling, Deputy Director of the Guangxi Department of Commerce, fruit imports from ASEAN through Guangxi's border crossings exceeded 40 billion yuan (about US$5.9 billion) in 2025, up 20% from a year earlier and accounting for more than one-third of China's total fruit imports from ASEAN. In the five-month period of 2026, Guangxi imported 1.25 million metric tons of fruit from ASEAN, up 13.5% year on year.
Chinese media said the development of Version 3.0 of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Area and the benefits of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) are providing fresh impetus for agricultural trade between China and ASEAN, with Vietnam among the region's key suppliers.
According to Chinese media, Guangxi has continued to upgrade infrastructure at Youyiguan Pass, Qinzhou Port and Nanning Wuxu International Airport in recent years. It has also established a network of 12 inspection and supervision sites for imported fruit covering road, sea, rail and air transport. Meanwhile, Nanning Customs has introduced a dedicated "green lane" for imported fruit and adopted smart quarantine procedures, reducing customs clearance time by about 40%.
At the same time, the region has continued to expand its cold-chain logistics system with dedicated refrigerated rail services, refrigerated containers and a modern cold storage network, helping shorten transport times, reduce losses and preserve the quality of fresh fruit throughout the distribution process.
Chinese media said continued improvements in logistics infrastructure, customs clearance capacity and trade promotion activities are helping Vietnamese fruit further expand its market share in China, adding that this will help spur further growth in agricultural trade between the two nations.
