Vietnam rises to second place in China’s giant fruit and vegetable market

VOV.VN - Vietnam has cemented its position as the second leading supplier of fruit and vegetables to China, with its exports to the northern neighbour reaching US$4 billion in the first nine months of the year, accounting for 20% of China’s total fruit and vegetable imports.

Durian and banana were the key products driving Vietnam’s strong growth in the Chinese market of 1.4 billion consumers.

According to data from the General Administration of Customs of China, between January and September, China spent US$20.3 billion on fruit and vegetable imports. Thailand remained the top supplier, exporting US$6.7 billion, up 10% year on year and increasing its market share to 33%. Vietnam followed with US$4 billion, a 19% rise compared to the same period last year, raising its share to 20%.

Durian continues to be Vietnam’s major export, with nearly 620,000 tonnes shipped to China by the end of September, earning US$2.3 billion. Vietnamese durian is directly competing with Thai products, which brought in nearly US$3.9 billion, as well as with exports from Malaysia, the Philippines, and Cambodia.

In the banana segment, Vietnam, once the leading supplier to China in 2024, has recently ceded the lead to the Philippines. During recent months, the Philippines earned US$245 million from banana exports to China, narrowly surpassing Vietnam’s US$232 million. However, Vietnam still led in volume, shipping 568,000 tonnes, far exceeding the Philippines’ 416,000 tonnes, thanks to a lower average price, about US$80 per tonne cheaper.

According to Dang Phuc Nguyen, secretary general of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association (VINAFRUIT), Vietnam’s banana exports are expected to surge in the final months of the year as China enters winter early.

Nguyen said this year’s colder-than-usual weather has limited China’s domestic banana supply, noting that subsequent storms in the Philippines are likely to disrupt their banana production, creating an opportunity for Vietnamese exporters to boost shipments through the end of this year and into early next year.
