Trade exchange seeks to boost processed food exports to Japan

VOV.VN - An online trade exchange on processed food will be held on June 23 - 24 as part of efforts to help Vietnamese firms seek partners and gain greater entry to the Japanese market.

The event will be co-organised by the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade) in collaboration with the Vietnamese Trade Office in Japan and the ASEAN - Japan Center (AJC).

During the event, experts will highlight the various opportunities for business co-operation in the processed food industry and discuss measures aimed at getting broader access to this market.

Most notably, Japan features high demand for processed foods ranging from fish, shrimp, eel, meat, soybeans, cereal products, fresh and processed fruit and vegetables, and coffee products.

Meanwhile, Vietnam is widely viewed as possessing strengths in these products and boasts a good supply capacity to the Japanese market.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnamese export turnover to Japan in the first five months of this year surged by 12.8% year on year to US$9.34 billion despite enduring global fluctuations.

At present both Vietnam and Japan are members of four bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements (FTAs) which serves to create a wealth of opportunities to expand trade co-operation across multiple fields, including processed foods.

In Japan, the number of people from Asian communities living and working has now reached up to 10 million, including roughly 500,000 Vietnamese people.

Therefore, processed foods imported from Vietnam are widely known among the Vietnamese and Asian communities residing in Japan, which is expected to facilitate the export of these products from Vietnam to this market.

At present, Vietnamese fruit such as dragon fruit, mango, coconut, and lychees make up a large market share and are increasingly popular in the fastidious market.

Moreover, a number of Vietnamese products, including coconut water, coconut milk, and coffee have successfully penetrated the distribution chain in Japan over recent times.

Vietnamese farm products have hit the shelves of major supermarket chains in Japan such as AEON, Donkihote, and Itoyokado.
