Khoai Chau banana was declared a collective trademark on January 12, becoming the fifth product in the northern province of Hung Yen receiving the Government’s protection.
In the past two years, the provincial Department of Science and Technology joined hands with Khoai Chau district to carry out a project on developing Khoai Chau banana brand, said Chairman of the district People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Son.
The project aimed to increase the product’s value and reputation, and ensure legitimate rights and benefits of banana farmers while expanding distribution and consumption network, he added.
According to Director of the provincial Department of Science and Technology Ngo Xuan Thai, in addition to building up a set of criteria for the brand recognition, comprising skin, length, diameter, weight, flavour as well as vitamin content, the project also looked to develop markets for this local specialty.
Since the project was implemented, the banana-growing area in the district has expanded to 500 hectares with the average production of more than 30,000 tonnes worth over VND200 billion (US$9 million) every year.
Khoai Chau banana has become favoured in the market thanks to its fragrant taste and appetising appearance. It has been consumed in China, the Republic of Korea, Russia and Saudi Arabia.
Hung Yen boasts five collective trademarks for its local products, namely Ban soy sauce, longan, Van Giang ornamental kumquat, Dong Tao big-drumstick chicken and Khoai Chau banana.
