HCM City breaks ground on 16-million-tonne QTM International Port

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc said Vietnam's more than 3,200 km of coastline and approximately 1 million sq.km of maritime area provide major advantages for developing the marine economy. Seaports and logistics play a vital role, with most of the country's import and export cargo transported by sea.

According to the Deputy PM, Vietnam's logistics costs remain high at around 14-16%, affecting the competitiveness of Vietnamese goods. Developing a modern seaport system, strengthening transport capacity and increasing self-reliance across the logistics chain are therefore essential in the years ahead.

He said the Cai Mep-Thi Vai port area holds a strategic position in Vietnam's national logistics network. Once completed, QTM International Port is expected to become an important link in the regional supply chain, helping reduce transport costs, create jobs, increase budget revenue and contribute to HCM City's growth targets.

Vice Chairman of the HCM City People's Committee Hoang Nguyen Dinh emphasized that shifts in global supply chains are boosting growing demand for cargo transportation, requiring continued upgrades to seaport and logistics infrastructure in terms of scale, technology and connectivity.

Cargo volumes transported by sea and inland waterways in HCM City rose 7.3% year on year in the first half. Following the city's expansion, demand for the transportation of goods and raw materials serving production, trade and import-export activities in HCM City and the Southern Key Economic Region continues to grow.

Dinh said this trend underscores the need for HCM City to continue investing in a modern, integrated logistics system with regional and international connectivity. He also urged the project developer and relevant parties to concentrate resources, apply advanced technologies, ensure construction quality, workplace safety and environmental protection. The city is committed to working with investors to remove obstacles and facilitate the project's implementation in accordance with regulations, he added.

According to Ngo Thi Thanh Vy, Deputy General Director of QTM International Port, the project goes beyond seaport operations and aims to develop an integrated logistics ecosystem comprising port operations, warehousing, cold storage, transportation, distribution and value-added services.

The company also plans to serve cargo segments including agricultural products, raw materials, animal feed, fertiliser, steel, industrial goods and processed food.
