First batch of Vietnamese-grown rice delivered to Cuban partners
VOV.VN - Thai Binh Group has delivered more than 470 tonnes of rice produced directly in Cuba to local partners, marking a practical step in high-tech agricultural cooperation and food security efforts between the two countries.
Vietnamese Ambassador to Cuba Le Quang Long, Cuban Deputy Minister of Agriculture Telce Abdel González Morera, and representatives from TBAGRI Agriculture Corporation and GRANMAX attended a handover ceremony on August 4 at the headquarters of the Agricultural Group (GAG) under the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture.
According to the signed handover minutes, TBAGRI completed the delivery of 470.099 tonnes of commercial OM5451 rice to GRANMAX in May and June 2026. TBAGRI finalized the delivery of 470.099 tonnes of commercial OM5451 rice to GRANMAX in May and June 2026.
The shipment, packed in 50-kilogram bags, was processed from 940.199 tonnes of fresh paddy harvested in two batches, yielding 199.187 tonnes and 270.912 tonnes of processed rice.
All crops were grown and harvested in the Yara area of Granma province, packaged in 50-kilogram bags, with Cuban partners confirming full receipt in line with agreed terms.
This delivery represents the first output of a 25-year sustainable rice value chain project (2025-2050) invested by TBAGRI in Cuba. The project aims for a target scale of 25,000 hectares, starting with a pilot phase of around 360 hectares in Granma province.
The project applies advanced farming techniques from Vietnam's Mekong Delta alongside standards from the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), transferring modern cultivation methods to local farmers to increase yields and production efficiency.
During the 2025-2026 Autumn-Winter crop, TBAGRI cultivated 166 hectares with an average yield of over 7 tonnes per hectare. Planting expanded to 246 hectares for the 2026 Summer-Autumn crop, with projected yields exceeding 6.5 tonnes per hectare. Vietnamese rice varieties, including OM5451 and OM8017, have shown good adaptability to local soil and weather conditions.
The handover of this first batch shows the initial results of Thai Binh Group's agricultural investment in Cuba, demonstrating effective cooperation between businesses of both nations in high-tech agriculture while helping advance economic ties, investment, and food security goals between Vietnam and Cuba.
