EuroCham: Vietnam among priority countries to receive vaccines

VOV.VN - The European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham) has announced that it has worked with EU diplomats to affirm that Vietnam should be among the developing countries with the highest priority to receive vaccines from COVAX.

The EuroCham leadership voiced their support for Vietnam’s vaccine access at an online press conference held on September 9 in Hanoi following their meeting with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh the same day.

Alain Cany, chairman of EuroCham, informed those in attendance that Vietnam has so far received 10 million doses of vaccines from the EU via the COVAX Facility, with another three million set to come from European countries in the near future.

He added that developed countries planning to give their citizens a third dose of the vaccine makes it more difficult for developing countries like Vietnam to access vaccines.

However, the chairman noted that EuroCham will continue to negotiate in order to bring more vaccines and COVID-19 treatment drugs to Vietnam.

He also stressed that the current COVID-19 outbreak and restriction measures in the country have forced 18% of orders from European firms to move elsewhere, with 16% also considering doing so, although no businesses are planning to leave the country entirely.

Cany said that what EuroCham members require at the moment a clear roadmap out of the current measures, designed to resolve the roadblocks to their commercial operations and give them a predictable path on which to plan the reopening of their businesses.

“One of the most pressing issues is the need for electronic vaccination passports to ease the free movement of vaccinated people both within and into Vietnam. In particular, we urge the government to create a fast-track process for foreign business leaders, experts, and their families returning to Vietnam,” he continued.

During the event, France’s Ambassador to Vietnam Nicolas Warnery said that the bloc’s partners are standing united to support their Vietnamese partners in the fight against the pandemic.

He added that the current legislation relating to working permits for foreign experts is also causing many difficulties for companies.

European businesses hope that more open policies will be implemented for fully-vaccinated foreigners before entering Vietnam, Ambassador Warnery added.
