Dak Lak’s largest FDI wind power complex joins national grid
VOV.VN - The largest foreign-invested wind power complex ever developed in Vietnam’s Central Highland province of Dak Lak has begun supplying electricity to the national grid on July 6 after years of regulatory and infrastructure delays.
The four-project wind power complex, comprising Krong Buk 1, Krong Buk 2, Cu Ne 1 and Cu Ne 2, officially entered operation on July 6 after overcoming prolonged delays related to land procedures, transmission infrastructure and turbine site approvals.
The project represents the largest foreign direct investment (FDI)-backed wind power development in Dak Lak, with a total investment of approximately VND8.7 trillion (around US$350 million) and a combined installed capacity of 200 megawatts (MW).
Located in Krong Buk and Pong Drang communes, the complex consists of four 50-MW wind farms. It is expected to generate around 640 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity annually for Vietnam’s national grid while contributing more than VND115 billion in local budget revenue each year.
Construction began in March 2021 and was completed in early 2024, but commercial operations were delayed by unresolved issues involving land clearance, power transmission corridor requirements and turbine foundation approvals. Following the resolution of those issues, all four wind farms have now been connected to the national grid.
The commissioning of the project is expected to strengthen renewable energy supply in the Central Highlands and central regions, where electricity demand continues to rise as the country accelerates its transition toward cleaner energy sources.
Earlier this month, another wind power cluster comprising Buon Ho 1, Buon Ho 2 and Cu M'gar 2 was launched in Ea Tul commune, Dak Lak province. Developed by VNM Beta Energy Co., Ltd., the projects have a combined capacity of 50 MW and a total investment exceeding VND2 trillion.
Once completed, the three projects are expected to produce more than 170 million kWh of clean electricity annually, contributing to lower carbon emissions and higher local budget revenues.
At the launch ceremony, Truong Cong Thai, deputy head of the Dak Lak provincial administration, said the expansion of wind power projects reflects both the province’s efforts to attract investment and its commitment to renewable energy under its 2021-2030 development plan with a vision to 2050.
He added that renewable energy is expected to become one of Dak Lak’s key drivers of long-term economic growth.
