CPI for August rises slightly, inflationary pressure eases

VOV.VN - The consumer price index (CPI) for August edged up just 0.005% compared to July, raising the eight-month CPI to 2.58%, the General Statistics Office reported on August 29.

This is the lowest increase of CPI recorded in August over the past five years.

Falling prices of oil and petrol helped halt the upward trend of CPI in August, though prices of essential consumer goods and services, as well as educational services stayed high.

Nine out of 11 major groups of commodities and services saw prices rise compared to July, including food and catering services (up 1.05%), beverages and tobacco (up 0.27%), garments, hats and footwear (up 0.18%), housing and construction materials (up 0.26%), and equipment and household utensils (0.21%).

Notably, educational service prices increased by 1.51% over the previous month, after localities decided to raise tuition fees, and children purchased items for the new school year.

Meanwhile, transportation costs decreased by 5.51% compared to July thanks to falling prices of petrol and oil.

Overall, the eight-month CPI increase at 2.58% has helped reduce inflationary pressure for this year, and Vietnam is likely to control its 2022 inflation at around 4%, as forecasted by many international organizations in recent times.
