Cotton Day Vietnam 2021 offers pandemic response solutions for garment sector

VOV.VN - The fifth Cotton Day Vietnam will be held virtually on December 1 to give garment makers a chance to learn about how to adapt to post-pandemic markets globally.

Themed "Sustainability and Transparency, You Can Trust”, the event will be jointly held by the Vietnam Textile and Apparel Association (VITAS) and the US Cotton Council International (CCI).

Cotton Day Vietnam 2021 aims to provide an update on trends and various perspectives on sustainable cotton development from many of the world’s brands and retailers.

It will also offer an opportunity for Vietnamese textile and garment makers to get to grip with the world’s fashion consumption trends and approach development solutions appropriate for the garment and textile sector over coming years.

The event will feature seminars with the participation of leading experts who will share experienced and solutions to meet post pandemic market requirements.

Vo Manh Hung, representative of Cotton USA in Vietnam, said the global textile and fashion industry has recently made significant changes as it moves towards greater environmental protection and sustainable development.

Hung pointed out that cotton from the United States is produced under transparent and quantifiable standards of the US Cotton Trust Protocol programme, a factor which can be considered key to help brands and supply chains reach their sustainability goals.

He noted that CCI is keen to help Vietnamese textile and garment enterprises gain greater insights into the trading process of US cotton as it proactively seeks raw material sources in the future.

Vu Duc Giang, president of the VITAS, said despite the complicated nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, the local textile and garment sector grossed US$32 billion from exports during the initial 10 months of the year.

He revealed that fashionable products from around the globe have reversed the trend over the past two years, which has resulted in Vietnamese vests and men’s shirts falling sharply by 70% and 47%, respectively.

To fulfil the sector’s US$43 billion export target next year, the VITAS representative advised local businesses to catch up with the world's fashion trends focusing on sustainable development, transparency, and green.

It can also be considered necessary for the local yarn industry to devise breakthrough solutions, including the use of sustainable materials such as US cotton, in order to meet the yarn export target of between US$6 billion and US$6.2 billion next year, Giang stressed.
