Canned Vietnamese tuna favoured by French consumers
VOV.VN - Vietnam’s tuna exports to France during the past seven months surged by 203% to US$350 million year on year, with processed and canned tuna products becoming hugely popular, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
VASEP points out that the growth rate of tuna exports to this market is estimated to have reached 510% per month, despite political turmoil and high inflation affecting consumer needs across Europe.
Nguyen Thi Van Ha, a VASEP expert, says that French consumers typically prefer to choose tuna as the product to replace white fish, and that France has increasingly given priority to importing processed and canned tuna products.
Of the figure, frozen tuna coded HS0304 remains the main export item to the market, accounting for 63% of the total value of tuna exports.
Vietnam is currently the 14th largest tuna supplier to the French market among non-EU suppliers. France is increasing tuna imports from other Asian countries, such as those from the Philippines which went up by 442% and Indonesia which rose by 42% this year.
The EU’s reopening to tourists is expected to push up demand for importing high-value fresh and frozen tuna. Huge demand for canned tuna products for restaurant chains helped to boost Vietnam’s tuna exports over the past seven months.
