Bamboo Airways to ink US$2 billion deal with GE for engines on Boeing jets

VOV.VN - Vietnamese airline Bamboo Airways unveiled on September 21 that they will sign a US$2 billion deal with General Electric to purchase GEnx engines to power Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, according to Reuters.

The deal is set to be signed in the United States in the presence of Vietnam President Nguyen Xuan Phuc, the airline said in a statement.

The GEnx engines are due to be delivered in 2022 and will be used on the airline's wide-body Dreamliner fleet in order to operate planned non-stop routes between the nation and the United States, the company said.

“This new signing agreement will be an important milestone for the airline to expand its transcontinental flight network, connecting Vietnam with medium- and long-range markets," according to a representative of the airline.

The local carrier went on to reveal that it will open a representative office in the US, along with signing agreements with San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport this week. These moves will therefore pave the way for its first test of a non-stop flight between the countries on September 23.

Moving forward, Bamboo Airways is expected to operate the route from the beginning of 2022, with an initial frequency of three flights per week, although it is aiming to quickly increase this to between five and seven flights per week, depending on market demand.

The airline is hoping to finalise procedures for non-stop commercial flights to the US early next year, pending approval from the Government.

In addition to direct flights to the US, the local carrier is also seeking to expand its international flight network and open additional routes to Australia, the UK, and Germany, all of which will use its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
