Apple supplier BOE plans new factories in Vietnam

VOV.VN - Chinese display maker BOE Technology Group Co Ltd, a supplier of both Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, have initiated plans to inject up to US$400 million to build two factories in Vietnam, according to information provided by news outlet Reuters.

Currently, BOE is in talks to rent dozens of hectares of land in the northern region to add to its relatively small plant in the south which supplies mostly television screens to both Samsung and LG Electronics Inc of the Republic of Korea.

BOE plans to rent up to 100ha and use 20% of the last specifically for a plant making remote control systems at a cost of US$150 million.

The rest of the land would be used for displays, with BOE spending US$250 million to build a plant on a 50ha site, while suppliers would use the remaining 30ha, all by 2025.

Moving forward, BOE plans to produce the more sophisticated organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) screens at the site, rather than liquid-crystal displays (LCDs). Apple, which included BOE in its 2021 list of manufacturing partners, uses OLED screens for its latest iPhone smartphones.

As China's biggest display maker by output, the firm is set to become the largest supplier of displays for new iPhones by 2024, analyst Kuo Ming-chi at TF International Securities forecast last week.

The northern region has recently attracted significant investment from electronics giants, thereby becoming a major hub for the production of smartphones, computers, and cameras, including flagship goods from both Apple and Samsung.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (Foxconn) and China's Luxshare Precision Industry are also in the process of making plans to assemble a number of Apple products in the area, such as laptops and tablet computers.
