Vivid memories of first general election 70 years ago

(VOV) - On the morning of January 6, 1946, Vietnamese people across the country, for the first time in their life, dressed up and went to polling stations to vote for people’s representatives and exercise their right to democracy.

Hanoians welcomed President Ho Chi Minh and other candidates nominated to National Assembly deputies on January 5, 1946.

The Government issued election regulations and general election time. The citizens had to cast the ballots by themselves.

On the morning of January 6, 1946, adults practised their rights while children cheered the first general election. 

National flags and posters were hung to campaign for the election in Hanoi.

Nearly 190,000 Hanoi voters elected 6 NA deputies, who were Ho Chi Minh, Hoang Van Duc, Vu Dinh Hoe, Tran Duy Hung, Nguyen Van Luyen and Nguyen Thi Thuc Vien.

Quang Ngai people chose 8 deputies for the first NA.

People in Saigon and other southern localities casted their ballots as from December 23, 1945.

The first general election elected 333 NA deputies, including 152 in the north, 108 in the central and 73 in the south. There were 10 female deputies.

The first NA met for the first time on March 2, 1946 at Hanoi Opera House.

New cabinet presented itself before the NA.
