Vietnam attends international documentary festival in France

VOV.VN - French audiences have the chance to view 20 documentaries directed by Vietnamese young directors in a special programme themed “Varan Vietnam Adventure” which is being held during the Cinéma du Réel (Cinema of the Real) international documentary film festival in Paris, France.

Among them is “Những đứa trẻ trong sương” (Children of the mist) by director Ha Le Diem which took home the Clarens Prize for Humanist Documentary Filmmaking during the 2022 edition of the Cinéma du Réel.

Furthermore, “Chuyến đi cuối cùng của chị Phụng” (The last journey of Madame Phung) by Nguyen Thi Tham, as well as “Ước mơ làm công nhân” (Pomelo) and “Đi tìm Phong” (Finding Phong) by Tran Phuong Thao from 2016 are being screened at the event.

The “Varan Vietnam Adventure” programme is co-organised by the Ateliers Varan in collaboration with the French Embassy in Vietnam.

Originally founded by Jean Rouch in 1978, Ateliers Varan is a scheme dedicated to Direct Cinema and to training filmmakers across the world. In 2004, a team of instructors led by André Van organized the first Varan workshop in Hanoi. Since then a total of nine workshops have been held in Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City.

In 2012, a handful of participants created their own production company, soon followed by their own training programme, Varan Vietnam, in 2016. As a result, several films were born out of this experience and enjoyed screenings at numerous festivals.

Cinéma du Réel (Cinema of the Real) represents an international documentary film festival organised by the BPI-Bibliothèque publique d'information (Public Information Library) in Paris and was originally founded in 1978. The festival presents approximately 200 films per year in several sections by experienced documentary directors, as well as first timers.

The screenings are taking place at the Pompidou Centre in Paris and in several movie theaters which are partners of the festival.

This year the festival gets underway from March 23 to April 2, with the event featuring documentaries since 2004, including pieces of works of “Varan Vietnam Adventure” programme.
