Ly Hai wins big at San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival
VOV.VN - Vietnamese filmmaker Ly Hai has earned international recognition at the San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival (SFNCFF 2025) for his acclaimed movie “Lật mặt 8: Vòng Tay Nắng” (Face Off 8: Embrace of Light).
Accordingly, the filmmaker received the Best Film Director award, while the film was honoured as Best Vietnamese Feature Film.
This year, SFNCFF 2025 has attracted the participation more than 100 works from over 30 countries across the Americas, Asia, and Europe, celebrating independent filmmakers who demonstrate innovation, cultural diversity, and creative storytelling in global cinema.
Lật mặt 8: Vòng Tay Nắng tells the story of a 17-year-old student with a musical talent who dreams of pursuing a music career despite opposition from those around him. Determined to follow his passion, he forms a band with friends and seeks opportunities to shine. The film features a mix of young and experienced actors, including Doan The Vinh, Long Dep Trai, and Meritorious Artists Kim Phuong and Tuyet Thu.
Since its premiere on April 30, the movie had earned more than VND231 billion (US$8.75 million) at the box office in less than two months.
Ly Hai was a well-known singer in the 1990s for his pop songs. He started making films in 2010 and has achieved great success with his franchise Lật mặt (Face Off), which consists of eight movies featuring various genres, including drama, comedy, action and thriller.
The first movie in the series, Lật Mặt, premiered in 2015 and earned more than VND72 billion (US$2.73 million) in ticket sales.
The seventh movie, Lật Mặt 7: Một Điều Ước (Face Off 7: One Wish), released last April, raked in VND482 billion (US$18.27 million), becoming Hải’s highest-grossing production.
