Khmer cultural colors to fill National Village in August
VOV.VN - A string of cultural events featuring Southern Khmer traditions will take place from August 1 to 28 at the Vietnam National Village for Ethnic Culture and Tourism in Dong Mo, Hanoi.
The program is designed to preserve and promote traditional cultural values of the Southern Khmer community and other ethnic groups residing at the common home of Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups.
It also provides cultural experiences for visitors during the summer, leading up to the 81st anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2026), National Day (September 2), and the 81st traditional day of the cultural sector (August 28, 1945 - August 28, 2026).
The month-long event is expected to gather more than 100 people from 16 ethnic groups based at the Village, alongside about 30 artists and performers from Can Tho.
A highlight of the program will be the reenactment of the Thák côn Festival, a national intangible cultural heritage of the Khmer community in Can Tho, scheduled from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM on August 23 at the Khmer village and pagoda area. The event recreates a traditional prayer ritual reflecting agricultural beliefs for favorable weather, bountiful harvests, and peace.
On August 22 and 23, the "Returning to the Western Region" exchange program will showcase the distinct culture of Southwestern Vietnam through traditional Khmer performances, Đờn ca tài tử (traditional southern amateur musical art), traditional pentatonic orchestra and Sa dâm drum performances, Rom vông dancing (traditional folk dance), flat cốm making experiences (pounded green rice making), and regional specialties such as bánh xèo (crispy Vietnamese pancakes) and bánh cóng (savory crispy fried shrimp cakes).
Throughout August, particularly on weekends, visitors can explore the Khmer cultural space and pagoda complex, observe Theravada Buddhist architecture, enjoy Rô băm (traditional Khmer classical dance) and Rom vông dances, try traditional costumes and crafts, and sample local products.
Additional weekend programs will feature Northern folk songs and dances on August 1 and 2, and Central Highlands cultural spaces on August 8-9 and 15-16. Visitors can also join themed tours, family cultural education activities, folk games, and cycling tours.
