Int'l circus show rolls into Hanoi

The 2016 International Circus Gala will open on January 14 at the Vietnam Central Circus, Hanoi, in celebration of the 60th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Circus Federation (VCF).

The large-scale programme unites leading circus artists from Vietnam, Laos and Mongolia. It will feature meticulous and diverse performances, including aerial acrobatics, balancing feats, shows of strength and magic tricks, as well as an animal circus. Many of the performances have won national and international prizes.

With a desire to entertain several generations of audiences with circus acts, the organisers have invited many meritorious artists to participate in the Gala.

On opening night, a 15-minute welcome performance inspired by a Russian film honouring performing artists will be directed by acclaimed artist Tong Toan Thang. It will be staged in the circus style with an aim of enabling spectators to imagine VCF's 60-year journey.

"This is an art programme that connects the performances, combines circus arts and contemporary dance, and mixes installation art, sound, light and even opera music in order to bring plenty of surprises to viewers," said Thang, the Gala director.

This year, the International Circus Gala will also give spectators a chance to carefully assess the position of Vietnamese circus in the international arena, as well as future plans for VCF.

"The Vietnam Circus Federation will aim to build many art programmes imbued with national identity and culture," said VCF director Ta Duy Anh. "This helps Vietnamese circus to create a distinct and unique feature compared to the international one."

The Gala will have five shows running until January 17.
