Hue stages exhibition and performance on Ao Dai tailoring and dressing heritage
VOV.VN - The Hue Museum of Fine Arts on July 7 opened an exhibition "Knowledge of Hue Ao Dai Tailoring and Dressing", featuring performances that introduced the evolution of the Vietnamese Ao Dai while promoting Hue's cultural heritage to visitors and the wider public.
The program included films, photographs and archival materials tracing the history and development of the Ao Dai. According to the organizers, the traditional garment has a long history and has long been closely associated with the lives of Vietnamese people, particularly those in Hue.
Originating from costume reforms introduced under Lord Nguyen Phuc Khoat, Hue is widely regarded as the cradle of the Vietnamese Ao Dai, where many of the garment's traditional values have been preserved.
Over the centuries, the Hue Ao Dai has retained its elegance, modesty and refinement, becoming a cultural symbol. Beyond festivals, it has also been worn at diplomatic ceremonies and featured in cultural and tourism promotion activities, helping promote Hue's image at home and abroad.
According to Tran Tuan Anh, Deputy Director of the Hue Museum of Fine Arts, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism inscribed "Knowledge of Hue Ao Dai Tailoring and Dressing" on the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2024. The recognition further affirms the enduring value of the Ao Dai in contemporary life while providing momentum for Hue to develop its "Hue - Capital of the Ao Dai" brand.
A highlight of the programme was a presentation by more than 100 models of different ages showcasing a wide variety of Ao Dai collections, including Nhat Binh and five-panel designs as well as traditional purple Ao Dai presented by middle-aged women.
Children's Ao Dai inspired by the art of Diem Phung Thi, horse motifs, Dèng weaving and recycled denim were also featured, alongside contemporary designs drawing inspiration from the royal parasol tree in Hue's Imperial City and phoenix motifs symbolizing peace and prosperity.
Through these activities, the organizers hope to further promote the heritage value of "Knowledge of Hue Ao Dai Tailoring and Dressing," helping promote Hue's culture, attract more visitors and foster the development of the cultural industries by building on the city's rich heritage..
