Hanoi cancels fireworks to concentrate on typhoon relief

Hanoi's authorities have announced the cancellation of all fireworks displays in all 30 districts and township of the city on the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Capital Liberation (October 10).

This move comes following the devastating aftermaths of Typhoon Yagi, which caused heavy property damage and loss of life in northern Vietnam.

Speaking at a meeting of the municipal Party Committee’s Standing Board on September 24, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee Bui Thi Minh Hoai emphasised that the move reflects the city’s commitment to its people, showcasing the spirit of 'Hanoi for the nation, with the nation."

While cultural and artistic events will proceed as planned, the city's administration will reassess the scope of each event, prioritising practical and meaningful activities that involve the community.

Vice Chairwoman of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for Information and Education Dinh Thi Mai commended the city's decision, describing it as a timely and necessary show of support for those affected by the typhoon.

A day earlier, the Hanoi Military High Command proposed limiting firework displays to a single show at Hoan Kiem Lake instead of multiple locations across the city.
